The music of the middle east, using traditional instruments such as the drum, tamborine, and lute all definitely define the middle eastern culture. In many european countries, and in america those instruments are not all very popular and still used today for modern music. The Arabic language also defines the Middle Eastern culture, because those countries are really the only ones in the world who hold it as their main language.
ReplyDeleteI think that the music in the middle east helps define the culture. Any art form of music, art, film helps create a culture and give it an individual stand. They are very different from the rest of the world because they don't have that "modern" turn to their music. The arabic language makes the culture very different because it is not as common around the world.
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed the Postcards link of culture in the Middle East. It was very interesting to see how art and paintings are very similar to ours over here and how there are common themes. Such common themes that I noticed were; landscapes, parties/festivities,a painting of a few studious men, and the common working man.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that despite the political and social revolutions that have occurred in modern nations, how few rights individuals have. Speech, attire, actions, and beliefs can all be controlled or violators will be beaten with socks filled with soap bars, or worse.
ReplyDeleteI feel as though Islam ties together much of the Middle East's culture. The vast array of artistic and musical techniques define nations but encompass the principles and teachings of Islam. I think that a devotion to the religion, whether it be state sponsored or not, makes the culture in the Middle East stand out.
ReplyDelete1. Religious signifigance
ReplyDelete2. Language (semitic language system)
3. Food
Like Charlie, i found the postcard link to be interesting. The paintings on the postcards were very similar to European paintings i have studied in other classes, and this surprised me. The music and other art types are so unique to the Middle East that i figured the paintings would be so similar to that of the western world. Despite this, i still enjoyed them.
